Principles for Fine Motor Activities

1. Start with proximal (close to the body: trunk, neck and shoulders) and work toward distal (far from the body, the hands) 

 For hand speed and efficiency, the body must be strong and balanced beginning with the upper body (neck, shoulders and trunk). Once the upper body is strong and balanced, the arms are free to move forward away from the body allowing the hands to work efficiently. Make sure your child has a good strong upper body by providing activities to build those muscles first.

Suggested ways to adapt your fine motor activity to develop upper body: play the game on the floor either sitting or lying on your stomach propped on a pillow or on your forearms. Please see my website for specific gross motor suggestions in the brochure: Wiggling and Worn Out.
